Director Chaman Lal Rawal, or C L Rawal as he was better known, is credited with directing films such as Dil Hi To Hai (1963), Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966), Aabroo (1968), and Ladki Pasand Hai (1971). He, along with his brothers, producer Banarasi Lal or B L Rawal, and lyricist Gulzarilal or G L Rawal, owned the production company Rawal Films.
C L Rawal’s directorial Dil Hi To Hai starred Raj Kapoor and Nutan in pivotal roles. The film, which had songs penned by lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi and music by Roshan, also had the popular song Laaga chunri mein daag, rendered by Manna Dey. The story revolved around an impoverished widowed Hindu nanny who brings up an abused and abandoned Muslim lad.
Rawal’s Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya starred Dharmendra and Nutan in double roles, and portrayed the predicament of a man whose very own brother decides to marry the woman he loves. The film also showcased the loyalty and selfless friendships between Ashok (Dharmendra) and Amjad (Rehman).
Aabroo, directed by Rawal, was a romantic crime drama starring Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Vimi, Rehman, Leela Naidu, Shashikala and Deepak Kumar. The story of the film revolves around lovers, Manish and Neena, who are separated when Neena is forced to marry her sister’s husband. The husband is killed and Manish is arrested for his murder.
C L Rawal passed away on 17 July, 2005.
