Cinemaazi remembers the veteran producer, director and scriptwriter Vijay Bhatt on his 113th birth anniversary. Vijay Bhatt was the founder of Prakash Pictures, and the man behind masterpieces like Ram Rajya (1943) and Baiju Bawra (1952).
Bhatt started his career as a screenwriter for one of K.P. Bhave’s silent films. He later founded Prakash Studios in 1934 in Andheri. The first film produced under this banner Bambai Ki Mohini/ Actress(1934), written and produced by Vijay Bhatt.
Bhatt’s film Ram Rajya was a big hit, and had the distinction of being one of the few films Mahatma Gandhi enjoyed. In 1947, the film made the rounds in the US, where it was first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Baiju Bawra was also hugely successful, running for a hundred weeks in Bombay as a diamond jubilee hit.
Prakash Picture produced a total of 64 films in total in various genres, moving from black and white to colour with the changing times.
Vijay Bhatt directed 23 films in all. He also wrote lyrics for the film Snehlata (1936).
