Cinemaazi remembers Gope on his birth anniversary
11 Apr 1913
Cinemaazi celebrates the birth anniversary of Gope Kamlani, known to his fans as Gope, one of the most popular comedians in the early decades of Hindi cinema.
Gope started his career in 1933 with a small role in Moti Gidwani’s Insaan Ya Shaitan, in which he acted alongside the famous Jaddanbai (mother of later star Nargis), Ermeline and the comedian Dixit. Dixit and Ghory, another comedian, had formed a comedy duo along the lines of Laurel and Hardy. After Dixit died and Ghory left for Pakistan following Partition, Gope joined hands with the actor Yakub to form a comedic duo as well.
Gope also tried his hand at playing negative roles. In the 1951 Dilip Kumar- Madhubala starrer Tarana, he teamed up with Jeevan to play the villain, albeit in a comic style.
Gope was married to the actress Latika. He died prematurely in 1957 on the sets of Kundan Kumar’s Teesri Gali(1958).
