Actress Sumita Sanyal was born Manjula Sanyal in Darjeeling, Bengal Presidency, British India, on 9 October, 1945. Making her debut in 1960 in Bibhuti Laha’s Khokababur Pratyabartan, her name was credited as Suchorita for the film. Her name was further changed by director Kanak Mukhopadhay, who shortened it to Sumita, which was the name by which she was thereafter known.
