Cinemaazi remembers Govindrao Tembe on his birth anniversary
A renowned Hindustani classical musician, Govindrao Tembe also worked in Marathi cinema in the 1930s. Born on 5 June, 1881, he learnt the harmonium on his own and later trained under Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale. He considered Ustad Alladiya Khan his guru. Immensely successful as a musician, he performed all over the world. He also started his own company, the Shivraj Natak Mandali. He used to compose for Marathi dramas, and later transitioned to films as well. He composed for 10 Marathi films and also acted in 6 of them. He was the composer of the first Marathi talkie Ayoddhecha Raja (1932). Other films he worked in were Maya Machhindra (1932), Agnikankan (1932), Sinhagad (1933), Seeta (1934), Usha (1935), Pratibha (1937), Nand Kumar (1938), Saathi (1938), Krishna Sudama (1945). He also directed one film - Raj Mukut (1935).
