Cinemaazi remembers Muhammad Umar Mukri, popular as Mukri, the little big man of Hindi cinema, who made us laugh with his humour and toothless smile in hundreds of films. Cinemaazi remembers him on his 20th death anniversary of the talented actor.
A qazi (preacher) by profession, Mukri joined Bombay Talkies to find a steady pay. Soon, he was listed as an assistant director at one of the biggest studios of India. Occasionally, he would fill in for walking parts before Devika Rani decides to cast him in Jairaj's Pratima (1945).
Equipped with just a kind heart and a sense of humour, Mukri carved his place in the industry immortality with a genial smile and an open heart. He was very close to Dilip Kumar.
