Cinemaazi remembers actress and filmmaker Protima Dasgupta, who was encouraged to take up acting as a career by none other than Rabindranath Tagore himself. She debuted in Bangla film Gora (1938), based on his novel. Cinemaazi remembers Protima Dasgupta on her birth anniversary (5 September 1921).
Protima Dasgupta acted in 10 Hindi films and 8 Bangla films. She directed Chhamia (1945), with Begum Para and David as lead pair. She repeated this team again in Pagle (1950). Her second film Jharana (1948) was banned by Morarji Desai, the then Chief Minister of Bombay Province, on the ground that the film had explicit sexual scenes in it.
