Born 19 April, 1924, in Amraoti, Raghunath Madhav Tipnis was a known editor of films. Credited by the name R M Tipnis or R Tipnis, he edited such films as Kamal Amrohi’s reincarnation thriller Mahal (1949), the hit musical comedy Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Patang (1960), Bhaiya (1961), Ustadon Ke Ustad (1963), Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Men (1964), Afsana (1966), Baazigar (1972), Jugnu (1973), and Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi (1974).
Directed by Kamal Amrohi, Mahal proved to be hugely popular among the audience, paving the way for Indian gothic fiction and is considered a cult classic.
Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, a musical comedy directed by Satyen Bose, starred Madhubala with the Ganguly brothers—Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Anoop Kumar. A major commercial success, it eventually became the most successful work of Bose and Ganguly brothers, receiving overwhelming positive reviews from critics for its comical situations, soundtrack, execution and performances.
Tipnis also edited the Pradeep Kumar-Shakila starrer Ustadon Ke Ustad, and Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Men directed, produced and written by Kishore Kumar, who also starred in the film along with Supriya Devi and Amit Kumar. An adaptation of the American film The Proud Rebel (1958), it gained critical acclaim, but failed commercially.
Other films Tipnis edited include Baazigar starring Vijayalalitha and Roopesh Kumar, the Pramod Chakravarty-directed Jugnu starring Dharmendra about an extremely intelligent crook with a heart of gold who has the remarkable ability to steal from the most protected setups, and Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi about an heirless multimillionaire, who decides to leave his wealth to the person who has the longest beard, leading to complete mayhem as Kishore Kumar and K N Singh plot to outwit each other.
