Cinemaazi remembers Sudarshan Faakir on his death anniversary
Today we remember versatile Urdu poet and film lyricist Sudarshan Faakir, who passed away this day in 2008 in Jalandhar. Born in 1934, he belonged to the uncommon band of non-Muslim Urdu poets hailing from East Punjab. His poetry, though not copious, was profound. An MA in Political Science and English from DAV College, Jalandhar, he was active in dramatics and poetry from his college days, even directing Mohan Rakesh’s play Ashadh Ka Ek Din. After a stint with AIR Jalandhar, he moved to Bombay where he went on to pen lyrics for films such as Dooriyaan (1979), Tum Laut Aao (1983), Raavan (1984), Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986), Aaj (1987), Yalgaar (1992), Khudai (1994), Naajayaz (1995), and Prem Aggan (1998). Among his popular songs are Woh kagaz ki kashtii, the National NCC Song of India - Hum sab bhartiya hain, Mere ghar aana zindagi, Mere dukh kii koiii davaa na karo, Ye daulat bhi le lo ye shoharat bhii le lo, Ho jaata hai kaise pyaar na jaane koi, Phir aaj mujhe tumko bas itna batana hai, and Zindagi mein jab tumhaare gam nahin. His ghazals and nazms were rendered by leading singers such as Begum Akhtar and Jagjit Singh.
