1 Mar 1927
One of the most popular film stars of Malayalam cinema in the 60s and 70s, Adoor Bhasi was born on this day in 1927. He was born in Adoor, Travancore to renowned writer E V Krishna Pillai. Initially a textile technologist, he started acting in theatre while staying in Trivandrum. He also managed T N Gopinathan Nair's P K Memorial Press for some time. He became interested in cinema after moving to Madras and worked as a production manager in Tamil films for a while. Making his debut with a small role in Thiramala (1953), he went on to become an established actor in the industry, distinguishing himself with his slapstick comic style. Adya Kiranangal (1964) was a major breakthrough for him. While Prem Nazie became the romantic star, Bhasi found his forte in satire. Films like Kavyamela (1965), Paduna Puzha (1968), Chattakkari (1974), Uttarayanam (1975), Cheriyachante Kroorakrithyangal (1979), Karimpana (1980) boast of fine performances by him. In recent times, his legacy has been questioned by veteran actress KPAC Lalitha, who accused him of misusing his clout and harassing her.
