Early cinema singer-actor-composer Rafiq Ghaznavi was born in 1907 in Rawalpindi, British India. He was trained in music from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Lahore and emerged to be a popular Ghazal singer in the Sindh province. Going with the trend, he used orchestra pieces in his compositions too, but his most striking songs like O chand, tu bata de, Mere manka panchi, Man dhire dhire made use of single instruments like sitar, clarinet, been or piano was very effective. Associated in the cinema industry back when artists performed various roles, he not just acted and sang in films but was a successful music composer. As an actor, he appeared in Sarfarosh (1930), Laila Majnu (1931), and Chal Chal Re Naujawan (1944). He composed the music for Sitara (1938), Apni Nagariya (1940), Swami (1941), Sikander (1941), and Zeenat (1945). He was married to the veteran actor Anwari Begum. After partition, he shifted to Lahore and later settled in Karachi. Ghaznavi passed away on this day in 1974. Cinemaazi remembers him on his death anniversary.
