Cinemaazi remembers H C Bali on his birth anniversary
Born Harishchandra Bali on this day in 1906 in Punjab, H C Bali was an influential composer during the early years of the talkies. He trained under several master musicians Pandit Tola Ram, Ustad Maula Baksh and Pandit Dilip Chandra. Initially starting off as an actor, he soon shifted to music direction with the film Aurat Ka Dil (1933). Some of his notable films were D N Madhok's Watan Parast (1934), Bhikharan (1935), Jeevan Natak (1935), Pati Patni (1939), Aple Ghar (1942), Mahatma Vidhur (1943) and Janata (1947). Naushad was also his assistant for some time. He later retired from films and started a music school called Sangeet Vihar in Jalandhar. He also wrote learned volumes on music. He passed away on 24 June, 1976.
An interesting detail about H C Bali is the role he played in K L Saigal's career. Bali was living with R C Boral when Saigal was earning his keep as a typewriter salesman. Impressed by Saigal's singing prowess, it was Bali who introduced him to Boral, thus setting the ball rolling on an incredible career.
