Cinemaazi remembers Ajit Verman on his birth anniversary
Remembering music director Ajit Verman on the occasion of his birth anniversary—the gifted composer was born this day in 1947 in Calcutta. Running away from home, he was roped in by Salil Choudhury to join his orchestra, even as he worked as a musician with Satyajit Ray, followed by Shankar-Jaikishan’s orchestra in Bombay. By the mid-1970s, he turned music composer, scoring music for the low-budget Muslim social Noor-e-Elahi (1976), composing under his nickname Babloo, along with Dheeraj Dhanik. He turned independent composer with Govind Nihalani’s Aakrosh (1980), followed by Vijeta (1982) and Ardh Satya (1983). An impressed Mahesh Bhatt then roped him in for Saaransh (1984). Varman’s music is rich and complex in texture, incorporating Indian classical music as well as Western harmonies. Composing for Hindi films in the 80s and 90s, Yeh Aashiqui Meri (1998) was the last film he composed songs for, while Ananth Mahadevan’s Life Is Good (2012) has his last background score. Known for his small but memorable body of work, his inability to lobby saw him ignored by mainstream filmmakers, which hurt him deeply. Varman passed away in 2016.
