Cinemaazi wishes Jabbar Patel a very happy birthday

A renowned name in Marathi theatre and cinema, Jabbar Patel caught everyone's attention with stage productions of Ghashiram Kotwal and Brecht's Threepenny Opera, known as Teen Paishacha Tamasha in Marathi. He made his film debut with Saamna (1975), set against the backdrop of Mumbai's sugar co-operatives, starring two theatre heavyweights Dr Shreeram Lagoo and Nilu Phule. Jait Re Jait (1977) was set in the adivasi Thakkar community, the story of a honey gatherer called Nagya and Chindi, a woman who has left an unhappy marriage. He is famous for the acclaimed films Sinhasan (1979), Umbartha (1982) and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (1991). Umbartha featured arguably Smita Patil's best performance, while Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar won a National Award. Born on 23 June, 1942, today is his 79th birthday.
