Cinemaazi remembers Kamal Dasgupta on his death anniversary

Veteran music composer Kamal Dasgupta (28 July 1912 - 20 July 1974) was the man behind some of the most unforgettable melodies of the 40s. He was certainly a learner person with a PhD on Mirabai’s bhajans and music. In the career spanning around 14 years he is said to have composed around 8000 songs. A versatile music genius he was known to sing songs in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu and Tamil. In the early thirties he developed a close and lasting association with the poet Nazarul Islam. They produced around 400 songs together in a period spanning from 1934-45. He ventured into acting with the film Pandit Moshai (1936) but the recognition came from the legendary actor, director P C Barua’s film Jawaab (1942). He made a mark for himself as the versatile genius juggling between music compositions and acting. The cult numbers like Toofan mail ye duniya toofan mail from Jawaab (1942), Ghata chaayi ghanghor from Hospital (1943), Suno suno ek naya fasana and Mujhe sapno se kaun jagayega re from Arabian Nights (1946) and Chanda door gagan me bulaye and More janam janma ke saathi from Krishna Leela (1946) were his creations. His last film was Bodhu Baran (1967), after which he shifted to Bangladesh. He passed due to falling ill health and lack of proper medical treatment in 1974.
