Cinemaazi remembers the master storyteller Sachin Bhowmick on his death anniversary. He wrote for nearly 100 films in a career spanning more than four decades.
Bhowmick started his career in Hindi cinema with Lajwanti (1958), starring Balraj Sahni and Nargis. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anuradha (1960) was based on a short story written by Bhowmick, first published in the Bengali magazine Desh. According to Bhowmick’s autobiography, Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary was the primary inspiration for the story. Bhowmick also wrote the screenplay for the runaway hit Aradhana (1969) starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. He was responsible for convincing Sharmila Tagore’s mother to let her appear in Hindi films, and Shakti Samanta to cast her as the female lead in the film. Shakti Samanta had initially conceived the role with Hema Malini in mind.
Sachin Bhowmick developed the script of the Rajesh Khanna classic Anand (1971) along with Gulzar. He also penned the scripts for An Evening in Paris (1967), Gol Maal (1979), Janwar (1965) and Brahmachari (1968). As the times changed, Bhowmick adapted with them, and from 1970 onwards, he moved to write for action films like Warrant(1975), Azaad (1978) and Karz (1980). He also directed the filmRaja Rani (1973) starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, which did not fare well at the box office.
