Cinemaazi remembers Naseem Akhtar on her death anniversary

In 1942, Pandit Amarnath introduced the singer Naseem Akhtar to Hindi cinema audience in Nishani. A performer in Lahore Radio, she swiftly shifted to Bombay after her first film and sang for Bhai (1944), Pehli Nazar (1945), Shah Jehan (1945), Keemat (1946) and Ek Roz (1947). However, she moved to Pakistan after the Partition where she had a brief career in the films. Today is her death anniversary.

Cinemaazi remembers Sadashiv Amrapurkar on his birth anniversary

One of the most infamous villains of Hindi cinema, Sadashiv Amrapurkar was also a writer, director, philanthropist and social activist. Some of his popular performances in Hindi and Marathi films are in Ardha Satya (1983), Aakhri Raasta (1986), Aankhen (1993), Doghi (1995) etc. A keen photographer, he was also a first class cricketer who played in the Ranji Trophy. Sumati Gupte was an accomplished theatre and film actress who appeared in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. One of her most well received performance was in Bhalji Pendharkar’s Thoratanchi Kamla (1941). She along with her husband Vasant Joglekar produced Shevatcha Malusara (1966) and Janaki (1979) under the banner of Mera Pictures. Today is her birth anniversary.

Cinemaazi remembers Mac Mohan on his death anniversary

The number of people who became famous from the success of Sholay (1975) is incredible. One of the actors who benefitted from the film's iconic lines was none other than Sambha himself - Mac Mohan. But he lamented the fact that much of his role had been edited out of the film and did not even attend the premiere. He only realised how big a hit it was when he started getting mobbed wherever he went! He passed away on this day in 2010.

Cinemaazi remembers Pandit Feroze Dastoor on his death anniversary

Appearing in several films as a singer-actor during the 30s and 40s, Pandit Feroze Dastoor eventually chose to bid adieu to acting and immerse himself fully in Indian classical singing. In 1977 he sang a bandish Ghat ghat me Raam ramaiya in Raag Lalit for Shyam Benegal’s film Bhoomika.
