Cinemaazi remembers Meera Dev Burman on her death anniversary
15 Oct 2007
Cinemaazi remembers the eminent singer and lyricist Meera Dev Burman, wife of music director-singer S D Burman on her death anniversary. Born in Comilla, Bangladesh in March 1923, she settled in Calcutta and trained in music at Rabindranath Tagore’s Vishwa Bharti in Shantiniketan. Her meeting with S D Burman at the All India Music Conference in Allahabad and marrying him shortly after marked her professional association with music. A singer in her own right, her singing voice much like her husband’s had an unmistakable but charming Bengali accent. Burman set tune to a number of songs that were penned by Meera. She has been credited as the music assistant and composer in most of the iconic films of S D Burman’s career like Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Chupa Rustam (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Sagina (1974), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975) among others. She passed away today in 2007, succumbing to a prolonged illness.
