In a democracy, every honest man is the target - NISHANA of corruption.
Vijay (Shafi Inamdar) is a brave honest policeman. He lies with his wife, son Sunni (Mohsin) and sister Bharati (Rekha). Vijay and his group is known for their courage and they put an end to the drug Traffic in the city. Vijay is congratulated by Chief Minister Dharamdas (Raza Murad) and promised a promotion. Vijay his family and close friend and associate Sachin (Adi Irani) are rejoicing when Sachin sees a drug operation, he is shocked to see the involved person. He shoots the complete operation with a video camera but is detected. Sachin runs, a chase follows. Sachin manages to transport the tape to Vijay through a taxi driver and after doing so he is killed. Vijay ees the tape. He calls the commissioner Malik (Pankaj Dheer) to see the tape but before Malik can reach there, Vijay and his wife are killed Sunny escapes because he was hiding with the tape when his parents are killed.
Bharati is shocked and is left alone in the world with Mohsin who has turned into a vegetable, he cannot speak or react. Vijay is branded as a drug trafficker and due to that Bharati does not get assistance or sympathy from any one. To add to her misery arrives Cheda (Paresh Rawal) her admirer he keeps on wooing her and in an encounter Bharati kills him. Cheda's brother Puneet (Puneet) a mafia don swears to kill Bhrati.
Bharati is now chased by the Police and mafia and when everything is lost for her, Suraj (Mithun Chakraborty) her one time lover appears and saves her. Their meeting clears past misunderstandings and she comes to know that even he was a target of corruption. Love blossoms once again. Suddenly they see Sunny reacting to red colour. Bharati and Suraj together enact the death sequence of his parents. Sunny revives. They are thrilled but their happiness is short lived as Sunny is kidnapped by Puneet.
Bharati and Suraj vow to bring back Sunny and at the same time put an end to evil doors. Are they? Or how are they successful forms the revealing and nerve shattering climax of NISHANA.
