Cinemaazi remembers P Madhukar on his birth anniversary
Regarded as one of the most significant harmonium players in history, P Madhukar is credited with revolutionising playing techniques and establishing the harmonium as a respectable instrument in the pantheon of music. Born on this day in 1916 in Mumbai, he trained under Shankarrao Rajapurkar, Bahulkar and later Annasaheb Mainker. During this time, he started assisting Mainker in composing for films. Later he turned composer himself for some films like Vakil Saheb (1943) and Chalitil Shejari (1950). His mettle as an instrumentalist and researcher was the key to his mastery over various ragas and gayakis. He also attempted ot incorporate electronic technology in his repertoire. When the All India Radio was reconsidering their ban on the harmonium, his recordings were used in their assessment. His influence on the history of the instrument in India cannot be underestimated.
