Cinemaazi wishes M S Sathyu a very happy birthday

A very happy birthday to M S Sathyu! Born on 6 July, 1930 he moved to Bombay in 1952 after graduating from Central College in Bangalore. He was involved with IPTA's Bombay chapter, as well as Juhu Art Theatre (Balraj Sahni's group) and Bombay Youth. During this time he used to freelance as a set designer and lighting director. He was an assistant director on Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat (1964). He initially started making short films and documentaries, having also worked with Homi Sethna and Zul Velani previously. His first film Garm Hawa (1973) was caught in censorship struggle for nearly a year before making it to the screen. Containing arguably Balraj Sahni's finest performance, the film has become known as one of the finest chronicles of the schisms created by the Partition in society. His later films include the comedy Chithegu Chinthe (1978), the Ananthamurthy adaptation Bara (1980), Kahan Kahan Se Guzar Gaye (1981), Sookha (1983), Choli Daman (1988), Kayar (1991) among others. He has remained associated with the stage, participating in and directing several notable productions over the years.
