Starting her career as child artist Kanan Bala with Madan Theatres of Calcutta during the silent era, she was a rare artist of the silent era to make a smooth transition to the talkies. Transitioning from an amateur singer and unknown actor to the practitioner of classical music and Rabindra sangeet, Kanan Devi was known for the fast tempo of her singing, unusual for her time, which made her one of the most recognizable voices of that era. She turned a producer with the film Ananya (1949), produced under her banner Shrimati pictures.
