Cinemaazi remembers Shyam Sundar on his death anniversary

Shyam Sunder Gaba, known as Shyam Sundar, was a musician and composer par excellence. He composed music for 24 films (4 Punjabi and 20 Hindi films) in a short career of 15 years (1939-1953). Today is his 67th death anniversary. He was an admirer of Ghulam Haider. Shyam Sundar introduced Mohd. Rafi to the music world by giving him a duet with Zeenat Begum – Sohniye ni heeriye ni teri yaad ne bahut sataaya in Gul Baloch (1944). Mohd. Rafi also claimed that the song Aaj did pe ho kabu to dildar ki aisi taisi from Village Girl (1945) was his first Hindi song, although reportedly as song from Naushad composed Pehle Aap (1944) was released earlier. 

In a short but extremely fruitful career, he gave music for films like Sohni Kumharan (1939), Laila Majnu (1940), Jagga Daaku (1940), Bhai(1944), Village Girl/Gaon Ki Gori(1945), Dev Kanya (1946), Arsi(1947),Lahore (1949), Bazar (1949),Kamal Ke Phool (1950), Dholak (1951) and Alif Laila(1953). Madan Mohan completed the composition of songs for Alif Laila due to Shyam Sundar passing away in 1953.

Some of his notable compositions are Neend hamari khwab tumhare (Nai Kahani, 1943), Duniya ki yeh khushi hai tujhe bhool jaye hum (Bhai, 1944), Yeh kaun hansa ye kisne sitaaron ko hansaya (Village Girl, 1945) and Piya milan ko jaanewali sambhal sambhal ke chal (Dev Kanya, 1946).
