Ishwarlal, the veteran singer-actor and director, was born on 9th October 1911 to a Jain family in Kathewar, Gujrat. Soon after completing his teaching diploma at an astonishingly young age of 16, he moved to Bombay to pursue his dreams of acting in films. Ishwarlal joined Ranjit Studios in 1927. He appeared in Bhutia Mahal (1932) which was his first talkie film. He sang several duets in films like Billi (1938), Aaj Ka Hindustan (1940), Ummeed, (1941). He got the opportunity for a solo song in his 1942 film Fariyad. Some of his other notable films are Barrister’s Wife (1935), College Kanya(1935), Holi (1940). He carried on to work as a character actor in his later half of the career appearing in Shubadra, Mahasati and Khuda Ka Banda to name a few. He also directed Sohni Mahiwal (1946), Matrubhoomi (1949), Sati Narmada (1950) and more. He was also associated with Prafulla Pictures, Sun Art, Wadia Movietone, and Atre Pictures. He last appeared in Kahani Kismet Ki in 1973 which was released posthumously. He passed away on 22nd January 1969. Cinemaazi remembers him on his birth anniversary.
