The first Malayalam actor to win the National Award, P J Antony was born on this day in 1925. Having served in the Royal Navy during Second World War, he returned home and became involved in theatre. He soon became in a major name, particularly associated with KPAC's political dramas. Making his debut with Randidangazhi (1957), he has gone down in history for his memorable performance in M T Vasudevan Nair's Nirmalyam (1973). He also directed the film Periyar (1973). Other notable films were Ammayee Kannan (1963), Murappenu (1965), Kunjali Murakkar (1966), Iruttinte Athmavu (1967), Punnapra Vayalar (1968) among others.
