Born as Vasantrao Anandrao Painter, the director-producer has made a significant contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema’s history. He joined Maharashtra Film Company and was responsible for painting posters. Later he shifted to Prabhat Studio. He made his directorial debut with Prabhat Picture’s Gokul (1947). Earlier, he worked as an art director in D D Kashyap’s Nai Kahani (1943). 

His Hindi films include Seedha Rasta (1947), Sati Ahilya (1949), Muraliwala (1951) Devyani (1952), Sajani (1956), and Gokul Ka Chor (1959). He shifted his focus to Marathi films in the later phase of his career. Some of his significant Marathi films are Bara Varshe Saha Mahine Teen Divas (1967), Tila Lavite Mi Raktacha (1969), Varanecha Vagh (1970), Paach Nazuk Bote (1972), Sugandhi Katta (1974), Dagga (1977), Gyanbachi Mekh (1979), Jakhmi Vaghin (1984), and Thamb Thamb! Jau Nako Laamb (1990). Painter was awarded the prestigious V Shantaram award  

On May 31, 2006 he passed away in Kolhapure at the age of 93. He is survived by his six daughters and one son.
