Cinemaazi remembers Veena on her birth anniversary

Cinemaazi remembers veteran actress Veena (Shahzadi Tajwar Sultan) on her birth anniversary (4 July, 1926). Born in Quetta, Balochistan, she made her debut with Punjabi film Gowandhi (1942) directed by G R Sethi, opposite Shyam. She later moved to Bombay and played leading and stellar roles in films like Asra (1941), Najma (1943), Humayun (1945), Phool (1945), Dastan (1950), Afsana (1951), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Taj Mahal (1963).
Veena was also meant to play Bahar, a court dancer in K Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam when the film was first launched in 1945. In the latter part of her career, her most memorable role was as Nawabjaan in Pakeezah (1971). Veena retired in early 1983 soon after finishing Kamal Amrohi’s Razia Sultan where she played the role of the wife of empress Shah Turkhan. She was married to actor Al-Nasir and had two children with him. She died on 14 November 2004 in Mumbai.
