Music composer, multi-instrumentalist, writer, dramatist, activist, Salil Chowdhury wore many hats during his lifetime. Born on 19 November, 1922 in Sonarpur, he combined folk tunes with western harmonies to create some of the most unforgettable soundtracks in cinema history. He composed in films of 13 languages, predominantly in Bengali, Hindi and Malayalam. He also had a sparkling non-film song career, covering everything from peasant movements to the Bangladesh freedom movement. He was an active member of the IPTA and his compositions were hugely influential to a new generation of Bengali composers. His breakthrough film in Hindi cinema was Do Bigha Zamin (1953) and he went on to compose for classics like Pasher Bari (1952),Bansher Kella (1953), Jagte Raho (1956), Raat Bhore (1956), Musafir (1957), Madhumati (1958), Parakh (1960), Ganga (1960), Komol Gandhar (1961),Kabuliwala (1961), Memdidi(1961), Chemmeen(1965),Anand (1971), Mere Apne(1971),Anokha Milan (1972), Rajnigandha(1974),Chhoti Si Baat (1975) and many more.
