Laloo a carpenter by profession, went to Bombay for the first time, on an assignment.

"SUBSE BADA SUKH" opens with Laloo returning to the village after six months. In the village, Laloo meets his childhood friend, Shankar, the Zamindar's son, and overwhelms him with all sorts of fabricated tales about the city & its life. He tells Shankar how the "Subse Bada Sukh" of life, which is sex according to him, is so freely available in the city.

Shankar who has never been to the city is aroused by Laloo's tales and is curious about the city. They both come to the city with lots of money to enjoy life and free love which they consider the greatest happiness in life.

Soon Shankar gets disillusioned and realizes that Laloo is a liar. He decides to go back to the village.

Laloo accidently meets a call girl. To save his face he takes her into confidence and gives her Rs. 200/—. He informs Shankar how he has met a sporting girl who is willing to do anything for the sake of fun and not for money.

They come to the girl's house only to discover that she is a mother whose child is seriously ill and whose husband is in jail. Driven by tragic circumstances she is compelled to sell her body to save her child.

Shankar and Laloo are ashamed of what they were about to do and immediately develop a brotherly feeling for the girl. They at once run for medical aid. They console the worried girl and sit up throughout the night to keep a watch over the sick child.

In the early hours of the morning they find the child in safer condition. They leave behind all the money they have and start for the village.

To their pleasant surprise they discover suddenly that their mission is fulfilled. They have received the greatest happiness in life --- which is not sex.
