Cinemaazi remembers actor-singer Ruma Guha Thakurta, maiden name Ruma Ghosh, on her death anniversary. She passed away on 3 June 2019. She was the founder of Calcutta Youth Choir (1958). She was the daughter of the famous singer Sati Devi and sister of Bijoya Ray, wife of Satyajit Ray.
She made her debut in Amiya Chakraborty's Jwar Bhata (1944) at the age of 10. This was also the debut film of Dilip Kumar, in which he played the second lead. Her next film as Ruma Ghosh was Nitin Bose's Mashaal (1950) in Hindi, which had a Bengali version called Samar, adapted from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Rajani. She portrayed a blind girl, Sarla. Her other films were Afsar (1950) and Raag Rang (1952). She worked with renowned filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, Tarun Majumdar, Rajen Tarafdar, Aparna Sen and Mira Nai.
She married Kishore Kumar in 1951. Their son is Amit Kumar. After they divorced in 1958, she moved to Calcutta and continued to work there. She later married Arup Guha Thakurta in 1960.
