Cinemaazi remembers R D Burman on his birth anniversary

R D Burman started his career by assisting his father S D Burman in numerous films. At the time of his entry into the industry as an independent composer, the audience and industry were still mesmerised with the classical compositions of Naushad, folk songs of SD Burman, western effects of Shankar Jaikishan, OP Nayyar, Salil Chowdhury, Ghazals of Roshan, Madan Mohan. The first film he worked on was titled Raaz produced by Guru Dutt. It starred Waheeda Rehman in her first-ever double role with Sunil Dutt in the role of an army doctor, the film remained incomplete. Ultimately he made his debut with Chhote Nawab (1961).
Much before his collaboration with Kishore Kumar made its mark, it was Mohammed Rafi whose voice did justice to his music. Some of the finest songs composed by RD were with Rafi such as – Tum bin jaoon kahan, Ni sultana re pyar ka mausam aya, kitna pyara wada, and Arrey ho goriyan kahan tera desh re. He made music for almost 331 films. RD Burman made his acting debut in Mehmood’s Bhoot Bangla (1965). Later in Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) he wowed the audience with his role as the comical character Mr Popat Lal. He passed away sooner than the world could bear but continues to be remembered through his evergreen songs.
