Jainendra Jain belongs to that generation of Hindi-film screen writers whose names are often less remembered than the stars and directors, even though their words helped define the films those stars inhabited. A screenwriter, dialogue writer, filmmaker, and producer, Jainendra Jain (1939–2007) moved from journalism to cinema and became associated with some of the most recognizable Hindi films from the 1970s to the 2000s.
Born Jainendra Kumar Jain on 4 October 1939, Jainendra Jain began his professional life as a journalist, working with The Times of India for more than a decade before moving to film.
His breakthrough came with Raj Kapoor's Bobby (1973), for which he wrote the dialogues and established Prem Chopra as the leading villain with the iconic dialogue, “Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra (My name is Prem, Prem Chopra). The film went on to be a defining film of the decade. Besides Raj Kapoor, Jain also worked with leading directors such as Bapu, K. Viswanath, Subhash Ghai, and Raj Kanwar.
Following the massive success of Bobby, he went on to write dialogue and screenplays for several iconic films including Kalicharan (1976), Prem Rog (1982), Woh Saat Din (1983), Judaai (1997), and Tere Naam (2003).
Jainendra Jain's career is striking for the extensive range of genres he worked in. His screenwriting credits include romance, family melodrama, social drama and mainstream commercial cinema, as is demonstrated by his work within Raj Kapoor's socially conscious melodrama, the action-oriented storytelling of Kalicharan (1976), the family dramas of the 1990s, and the intense romantic cinema represented by Tere Naam (2003), or the slapstick-leaning comedy Judaai.
In 1985, he stepped into direction with Jaanoo, for which he was credited as director and producer as well as writer/lyricist. Filmmaker Anees Bazmee has spoken about working as an assistant with Jainendra Jain. Bazmee recalled that he was assisting Jain on Prem Rog before Raj Kapoor took over the project, which gave him the opportunity to work closely with Kapoor. Bazmee later said that what he learned during those years became an important part of what he eventually achieved as a filmmaker.
He passed away in Mumbai on 23 December 2007, at the age of 68, leaving behind his legacy of understanding popular emotion that helped give Hindi cinema some of its most enduring stories, conversations and emotional situations.
