David (Amitabh Bachchan) is a party worker- He has blind faith and devotion towards his party leader Chaturvedi (Sadashiv Amrapurkar). But the leader is an unscrupulous opportunist. He has no regard or respect for anybody. At the first opportunity he rapes David’s wife, Mary (jayapradha). Unable to bear the shame, Marry commits suicide. When David comes to know about the treachery of his leader, he goes to kill him. The leader is saved by two of his beneficiaries, Inspector Sahay (Dalip Tahil) and Dr. Verma (Bharat Kapoor). The rape case is twisted into a murder case by these three and David is sentenced to life for murdering his own wife. His infant son is left to the care of his trusted friend Mahesh (Anupam Kher). Mahesh promises David that he will sow the seeds of hatred and revenge in the mind of his son against the three villains right from childhood. David makes a couple of abortive attempts to escape from the jail and his life sentence is enhanced to twenty four years in prison.
David comes out of the prison after serving the sentence of twenty four years; the fire of hatred and revenge still burning inside him.
To his surprise and disappointment David learns that instead of making his son a rowdy and villain hater, his friend Mahesh has made his son Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) a C.I.D. police officer. David decides to eliminate the three villains all by himself. First he finds out Inspector Sahay who has now become S.P. and kills him very intelligently.
The murder of Sahay alerts the entire police and that start hunting David. His own son Vijay is appointed head of this operation. And thus starts the confrontation between father and son.
Inspite of the protection given to Dr. Verma by a huge consignment of police. David kills Dr. Verma too. At this stage Vijay comes to know that David is his own father and also that the motive for his (David) killing the villains is the rape of his own mother!
