Girish, Harish and Chandranath are three brothers, all married with children, all living together in their own house in Calcutta. Girish is the eldest with a flourishing practice at the bar. Harish is also a lawyer.
Only Chandranath doesn't do anything worthwhile and whatever business he does with the help of his eldest brother's money, he loses it.
Girish is always busy in his own profession. His wife Siddheshwari is supposed to look after the household but, being quite often sick and because she loves Chandranath's wife, Sheela, very much she has handed over the entire responsibility of running the household, managing the kitchen and taking accounts of the servants and money to Sheela. The second brother's wife, Nayantara, doesn't like the youngest one managing the finances when she is there. Nayantara schemes to force Sheela to leave the place so that she could control the house. Sheela with her husband and children move to the village house. The departure of Sheela and her children makes Siddheshwari sad.
Nayantara, however, doesn't get control of the house, on the other hand, she feels that Sheela must be very happy in the village house with all the income of the land, property and cultivation to herself. She now schemes to have Sheela and her family thrown out of the village house. Girish, never knowing what's happening in the house, agrees to Harish's plan to evict Chandranth. How finally and dramatically Sheela comes back to the city house and all stay together forms the rest of the story.
