Shammi is a happy go lucky bachelor student staying with his famous Doctor brother Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy and their beloved daughter Rekha.

One day Shammi's close friend Rajinder Nath pays him a visit. Rajinder Nath is engaged to a girl whom he does not love. Instead he loves another girl Madhavi. He cannot dare to break the engagement with the girl he does not love because his mother will disinherit him. At the same time he does not know how to get rid of her. He has a plan up his sleeves which he discloses to bewildered Shammi. The plan is simple and yet intriguing. Rajinder Nath wants Shammi to fall in love with the unwanted girl. This unwanted girl is none other than Asha Parekh. At the sight of her photograph, Shammi falls in love with her and starts chasing her in the Kashmir Valley on beautiful locations and in a dak bungalow, where a bear (Rejinder Nath disguised) makes Asha Parekh reciprocate Shammi's love. And so the lovers reconcile their difference in a big way.

And in the meantime Rajinder Nath has also been busy in crossing hurdles which include encounters with her father Dr. Dhumal.

The dramatic side of the story starts with the entry of the great black mailer Pran and his pretty prey Shashi Kala. Shashi has a grudge against the elder brother of Shammi Dr. Sarin, who is happily married with Nirupa Roy and has the beloved little baby Sarika as a daughter. Shashi lures Dr. Sarin to fall for her and as ill luck would have it, Dr. Sarin does ultimately fall for her. This new love angle continues till one day baby Sarika suffers an accident and for want of attention from Dr. Sarin, dies in the hospital. Shammi reveals this to Sarin, who gets enraged to the point of murdering Shashi Kala. On the other hand Pran has also reasons to get rid of Shashi. Two bullets are fired to kill Shashi by two persons, involving in the process, our hero Shammi. There is a drama at the house of Asha Parekh between her and her high ranking police official father Raj Mehra, who is out to arrest Shammi for murder. The question arises whether the police officer will allow his daughter Asha to marry the murder suspect Shammi or not, and whether Shammi is booked for the first degree murder of Shashi?
