Gopal (Randhir Kapoor) and Lal (Pran) are both crooks, both masters in the art of extracting money from the gullible and the simple.

Both the Crooks clash on the common issue of a profitable client. Each counterattack and foils the others attempt to dislodge him from the advantageous position of power in the hotel, till it becomes a deadlock.

They resolve to solve it by an honourable bet, as to who would be the first to take out a substantial amount of money from the young charming, beauty queen, Sapna (Mumtaz).

Each tries in his masterly and accomplished way to defeat the other but eventually, both are defeated - by Sapna's honesty and simplicity, Gopal has fallen in love with Sapna.

Their outlooks change so much, that they are ready to put their lives in danger as they come to know that Dewan (Anwar), the murderer of Sapna's father (Sapru), has followed her to the hotel to secure a fabulous necklace of thirty lakhs which unknown to Sapna has been left as a legacy for her in a secret place.

Sapna leaves for the search followed by Dewan and also followed by Gopal and Lal, who anticipating danger to her try to offer their services but by now she knows their reality and runs away from them and right into Dewan, who proclaims to be her father's old and dear friend and takes her away to his place.

Her eyes open to the facts only when Dewan catches Gopal who had come to rescue her and is about to kill him.

She knows the truth now but it is too late. 

Too late to live !

Too late to search for the necklace  !!

Too late to enjoy their love !!!
