Naresh Dutt, son of millionaire Somesh Dutt meets with an accident and seemingly loses his memory. When he is brought home, it is revealed by Somesh Dutt that Naresh is in fact regaining his memory. It turns out that this man is not their own son. Somesh Dutt and his wife Shivani lost their son years ago in the Kumbh Mela and died, a fact Somesh hid from his wife. They found this young man lying on the railway tracks six years ago. Shivani insisted that they had finally found their long-lost son, and in order to retain her sanity the family took him in.

Meanwhile, Naresh starts recalling his past. Six years ago, he went by the name Amit. Amit was a middle-class man married to his unhappy wife Rekha, who nursed ambitions of becoming wealthy and famous. Rekha was married to Amit against her wishes. They have a son called Mithun. In order to satisfy Rekha’s whims, Amit was slowly driving himself into debt.

One fine day Amit meets Ranjit Malik, his childhood friend. Ranjit who just returned from America is a very rich businessman. He soon enters their life. Rekha gets mesmerized by Ranjit’s lifestyle. Meanwhile, Ranjit is attracted towards Rekha. In order to woo her; he creates misunderstandings between the husband and wife. On the pretext of going on a trip to Mumbai, Ranjit throws Amit off the train. This is when Amit is found by Somesh Dutt.

Having recalled his past in its entirety, Amit goes back to Kolkata in a the guise of a rich movie producer. Rekha now goes by the name of Sunita Devi, a popular Bengali film actress. Her personal life is still rife with differences: Ranjit feels that she used him as a stepping stone to success, and Mithun has been sent off to a boarding school. Under the name of Naresh, Amit casts Sunita Devi as the main lead in his film.

The film that he plans to produce revolves around the story of Amit and his family, and his eventual death at the hands of Ranjit, six years back. Slowly things start falling into place and Naresh reveals his true identity during a projection of the train sequence of the film. This shocks Ranjit and Sunita to the core. For years, Sunita has been under the impression that Amit killed himself by jumping off the train. When she realizes that Ranjit attempted to murder him, she renounces Ranjit. A bitter, scared and angry Ranjit goes to kill Amit but is caught by the police due to a trap set by Amit/Naresh. Finally Amit is reunited with his son and takes back custody from Rekha. He leaves Rekha behind, alone and sad. Eventually, he returns to Rekha’s house and accepts her into his life at the insistence of his parents. Mithun forgives Rekha as well and the family comes together once again.
