The moment Sangeeta (Rekha) entered her youth, smile from her lips vanished. Her life was devoted to look after her large family. She took a job and started looking after her large family. In her family there was her mother, her useless and drunkered brother (Raj Babbar) his wife and two children.

A mimickery artiste (Amol Palekar) was also living in her house as paying guest. He was more of a guest since his profession did not give him enough money to pay his rent regularly. Even then he was liked by everybody in the family. He was in love with the widow sister, of course the widow sister was not aware of it.

Sangets'a father who created such a big family had left them years ago to fend for themselves was returning to the house. This news created a storm in the house. Sangeeta was very happy, because after so many years of toiling she was going to be relieved for the family responsibilities. Sangeeta's father did come back but as a Sanyasi. Instead of taking over the family responsibilities from her he started preaching empty sermons. This enraged Sangeeta and she turned him out of the house. Once again life lost all charm to Sangeeta and she fell back on her duties.

Sangeeta was in love with Prem (Kanwal Jeet) and was planning to marry him as soon as circumstances permitted. But when she came to know that her widow sister was in love with him the last streak of happiness vanished from her life.

Roop Kumar was the manager in the office of Sangeeta. To satisfy his animal passions he tried his tricks with Sangeeta but was rebuffed by her. However he was able to hook Sangeeta's friend Kalpana and her mother and became the lover of both. When Kalpana came to know of the double standards of Roop Kumar she wanted to commit suicide but Anand saved her. Unable to bear the shame Kalpana's mother kills Roop Kumar and commits suicide herself.

Social worker Sangeeta requested Anand to marry Kalpana. She decided to marry her widow sister to Prem. In the meantime good sense prevailed on the brother of Sangeeta and he started working. Sangeeta heaved a sigh of relief and agreed to marry her boss K.P. Singh when he proposed to her. Could she do all this. For the answer see JEEWAN DHAARA.
