Bhola is an orphan staying under the staircase in a chawl in Bombay in the midst of different types of middle class families. He serves the inmates day and night, lives on the food they give him and studies hard. Gowri, daughter of one of the tenants, is teased by all as being a mad girl. The similar treatment meted out to them by the people brings Bhola and Gowri together and helped by Shersingh, a good hearted lorry driver living in the chawl, they become lovers. How the boat of their love runs into rough seas and how ultimately the lovers are united in marriage are interestingly told in this never-a-dull moment movie !
