Lyricist Anwar Sagar is best remembered for his hit song Waada raha sanam from Abbas-Mustan’s Khiladi(1992) which was picturised on Akshay Kumar and Ayesha Julka. He had penned songs for several films from the 80s and 90s including David Dhawan’s Yaraana (1995), Jackie Shroff's Sapne Saajan Ke (1992), the Ajay Devgn starrer Vijaypath (1994), and Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), among other films. Other popular songs he wrote include Dil ka kya kasoor, Yeh dua hai mere rab, Gaa raha hun is mahfil me aapki mohabbat hai, Tere har sawal ka jawab ban jaungi, and Do din to kya na gujarenge do pal tere bagair. Anwar Sagar also worked with leading music directors of the time like Nadeem-Shravan, Rajesh Roshan, Jatin-Lalit and Anu Malik.

Hailing from a relatively humble background, he began his career in films penning lyrics for the songs of the 1982 release Zakhmee Insaan, starring Shakti Kapoor and Javed Khan. The music of the film had been composed by Nadeem-Shravan who soon emerged as the most sought-after music director duo in the film industry. The music was a hit and brought together singers such as Amit Kumar, Suresh Wadkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy.

Sagar went on to pen lyrics for songs in Dil Ka Kya Kasoor (1992) starring Divya Bharti, Yaarana and Vijaypath, establishing himself as a name to reckon with. The track penned by him, Waada raha sanam from the Akshay Kumar-starrer Khiladi, proved to be a game-changer. It was considered by many to be the finest work of Sagar’s career. Among his other films were Ilaaka (1989), Lashkar (1989), Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), Shiv Ram (1991), Balwaan (1992), Juaari (1994), Baazi (1995), The Don (1995), Ganga Ki Kasam (1998), Sar Aankhon Par (1999), Benaam (1999), and Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar (2001). The last major release of his career was the Fardeen Khan-starrer Kitne Door Kitne Paas (2002), featuring his song Rulati hai mohabbatein.

Anwar Sagar passed away on 3 June, 2020. He was 70. He was survived by his wife and two children.
